Cool Globes and Climate Change

Description:  While attending the 2010 Annual Meeting for AAG in Washington, D.C., Associate Editor Veronica Armour took some time off to see the sights.  While at The National Mall the Cool Globes exhibit on climate change caught her eye.  Here she shares the photographs she took of the globes in a PPTs slide show and the website where you can learn more about the exhibit that is going on around the globe!

Questions for Discussion:
Why do geothermal reservoirs tend to be located near tectonic plate boundaries?

Igneous Rocks and Volcanoes

The Wiley GeoDiscoveries Media Libary has numerous animations, simulations and interactivities that help to explain the science behind the recent Iceland volcano eruption (Eyjafjallajokull Volcano).

Here are a sample of some of the media assets available [viewed best using Internet Explorer]:

Asset:  Volcanoes and Igneous Rocks Simulation
Description: An illustration of the processes that control textures of igneous rock.  Includes animated diagrams that are correlated with a temperature gauge which you may manipulate to temperatures between 0 and 190 degrees Celsius.

Asset:  Hotspots
Description:  Shows the formation of islands from molten rock at a hotspot.  Discusses the process by which a chain of islands is created, eventually moving away to cool and sink, and finally becoming a collection of sea mounts.

Asset:  Volcano drag-drop
Description:  A drag and drop exercise in which you must correctly place terms on a diagram featuring a volcano and a cross-section of the crust beneath it.

Discussion Questions:
Why do explosive eruptions occasionally have global effects on the weather and/or on human activities?

Photographs for the Geosciences

Description:  Concept Caching is a pedagogical twist on the popular Geocaching and Earthcaching.  Photographs taken by professors teaching in the Geosciences are ”cached” along with GPS coordinates and information relating it to core geographical concepts.  Each cache contains a unique url to embed in PPTs or show during lectures.  Professors and students of the Geoscience are encouraged to participate in the community by caching photos from their own travels.
